What's Going On? June 2014

Sharing Christ through Media in Latin America

Teens in Cuba Need Your Help Now!
July 2014's National Youth Conference is short on funds.

We need your help to make this happen, cost $100.00

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Young people from the 16 provinces want to travel across Cuba by bus, flatbed trucks, and anything that has 2 wheels or more to attend this conference.  This is the only time in the year that many of these teens ever get to meet other Christian teens that live in Cuba.  With special permission from the Cuban government, they are allowed to travel out of their own province to attend this conference.

This Cuban Youth Conference will be held from July 21-24. The cost to sponsor one young person’s attendance is $100.00.  This will cover their transportation, housing, food, and some of the cost of the venue in Matanzas. At this time we are still in need of the funding for 50 more young people to attend. This will reach our goal of bringing 250 young people to the conference. A team of mostly
Spanish-speaking teachers from Florida, California, Tennessee, and Texas are preparing to bring great Christ-centered Bible lessons, singing, and Christian influence into the lives of the young people that will attend.

You or your congregation can make a real difference in the lives of these young people who have lived under communism their whole lives.  When you look into the eyes of the Cuban youth that are without Christ there is emptiness due to their lack of hope.  But, those who have hope in Jesus are animated about their faith and show real hope in their everyday lives, in spite of their difficult circumstances.  We want to give that hope to as many young people as we can.

All donated funds will go to the Youth Conference.

My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let
them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those
who find them and health to a man's whole body. Above all else, guard your
heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix
your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways
that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

Wow! Over 8,000 clicks in the first week!

the website to learn about Jesus.

We just heard from:

for teaching and maturing the Church.

their church.

"How can you help us teach them about Christ? We don't speak Spanish and a lot
of Spanish-speaking families have moved into our community."

-North Florida: "We need Spanish materials to use in our Sunday classes and
worship services.  The website will give us a lot of material to work with.
Thanks!"

Hot Topic Focus for NRB 2014

Digital Media Summit

This year's top takeaway ideas:

Social Media:
  • The Internet is shifting to mobile: 45% of the world will have mobile phones by 2016.  This means that we should develop our websites with mobile in mind first.
  • Amplify what we do via social media.
  • People trust friends and family, not news.
  • In posts, creativity, authenticity are important.
  • Post when your friends are on Facebook.
  • Content is king! Posts should be short, timely, and visual.
Quality across all platforms:
  • Improve quality listening and viewing experience.
  • People don't like to wait. Remember the 2 second rule for waiting.  Within 5 seconds you can loose 50% of the audience.
What does all this mean in the context of what we are producing and broadcasting
these day?
Our radio magazine format is a perfect platform for many short radio messages that can be shared across Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest, and more.  We will post regularly to these social networks.
How can you help share the gospel with Latin Americans using social media?
Go to thehappyvoice.org or lavozalegre.com and click on LISTEN, then select a radio series and message. While the message is playing "like it" on your favorite Social Network listed above, and ask your friend to SHARE it with their Latin American friends.

Disappointing News from Guatemala

Rick Harper, of Health Talents International, sent us this report on baby Seidy's eye exam:

Sadly, Seidy's condition could not be corrected...sorry.

Being born premature, the overexposure of oxygen in the incubator damaged the nerves in her eyes and it has now been too long for any correction.

Our disappointment is no match for Seidy's family. But, we know God has a plan for her and will guide her as He wills.

Let's remember Seidy and her family in our prayers.

Share the Words of Jesus With Our Spanish-Speaking Friends

Roberto Pino Shares a Listener
Update from Cuba

Roberto Pino directs the training of preachers in Cuba, serves as an elder, and is in charge of the follow-up of our radio listeners.

He writes: “We continue to receive reports of a growing audience in Cuba and are sending each listener the Bible course:
¿Qué Dice La Biblia? What Does the Bible Say?

Then, those who want to continue studying enroll in the lessons from Larry White: Cursos Bíblicos para Obreros Cristiano (Bible Courses for Christian Workers).

In a short time, we now have a whole lot of students studying and have put them in contact with local congregations everywhere.  The truth is that the radio program is a great blessing.”

Plans are being made now for Rex Morgan, Jose Castillo Jr, Gregory Huffine, and Jason Shepherd, to travel to Cuba in May to train evangelists that will meet us in Havana. We will conduct a workshop on teaching how to write and produce audio messages to further their effectiveness in their local ministries and with our radio listeners.

Seidy and her Grandmother
wait for Seidy's eye surgery.
Remember Baby Seidy's story about her blindness from our December report? An update from Health Talents International:

Seidy is on our patient list and Dr. Sierra has been in touch with her. Until the US surgeon sees her on March 8 or 9, we won't know the precise day of her surgery or whether or not it can be done.

Julie Wheetley is leading that team and will be at Clinica Ezell that week and will keep us posted. If I learn anything new, good or bad, we'll let you know.

Keep praying!

The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.                                                              Matthew 11:5

Our dream is to make the saving message of Jesus available to all who seek Him. We are working to accomplish this through the use of the media and partnerships with local churches of Christ and their ministries.
